4-Day Mount Kenya Trek – Sirimon Route to Point Lenana, Descend Chogoria

Sirimon Route • Point Lenana • Chogoria Route

4 Days / 3 Nights | From Nairobi | Minimum 4 Participants

Tour Description

Experience one of Kenya's most rewarding high-altitude adventures on this
4-day Mount Kenya trekking expedition, ascending via the scenic
Sirimon Route, reaching Point Lenana at 4,985 metres,
and descending through the spectacular landscapes of the
Chogoria Route.

The Sirimon Route provides an excellent approach to Mount Kenya's high-altitude
zone. Its generally gradual ascent allows trekkers to gain elevation progressively
while enjoying expansive mountain scenery and increasingly dramatic views towards
the main peaks.

The journey takes you through changing ecological zones, from montane vegetation
to open moorland and the remarkable Afro-alpine landscape of Mount Kenya.
Along the way, encounter giant groundsels, dramatic valleys and impressive views
of Batian and Nelion, Mount Kenya's two highest technical summits.

The highlight comes before dawn on Day 3, when you begin the challenging ascent
to Point Lenana (4,985 m), Mount Kenya's highest trekking summit.
Weather permitting, reaching the summit around sunrise provides an unforgettable
panorama across the surrounding highlands.

Rather than returning along the same trail, the adventure continues down the
contrasting Chogoria side of Mount Kenya, making this a true
mountain traverse.

This itinerary is particularly suitable for adventurous travellers wishing to
extend a Kenya wildlife safari with an active mountain experience.

Departure basis: Minimum 4 participants.

Day 1 – Nairobi → Nanyuki → Sirimon Gate → Old Moses Camp

Departure from Nairobi: 7:00 AM at the latest

Your Mount Kenya adventure begins with an early departure from Nairobi,
travelling north through Kenya's central highlands towards
Nanyuki, situated near the foothills of Mount Kenya.

Arrive in Nanyuki at approximately 10:00 AM, with time to prepare
for the mountain and enjoy lunch.

At approximately 11:30 AM, continue by vehicle towards
Sirimon Gate, one of the principal entrances to Mount Kenya
National Park.

After completing the necessary park formalities and meeting the mountain support
team, begin your trek.

The first day's walk is deliberately manageable, allowing your body to begin
adjusting to the increasing altitude. Trek through the lower mountain environment
towards Old Moses Camp, situated at approximately
3,300 metres.

The gradual introduction to the mountain is important preparation for the higher
elevations ahead.

  • Approximate walking time: Up to 5 hours
  • Highest overnight altitude: Approx. 3,300 m
  • Accommodation: Old Moses Camp / mountain cabin
  • Meals: Lunch and dinner

Day 2 – Old Moses Camp → Likii North → Mackinder Valley → Shipton's Camp

Morning departure: Approximately 8:00 AM

After breakfast, continue ascending through increasingly dramatic high-altitude
scenery.

The trail leads towards the Likii North Valley, a beautiful
mountain valley beneath the subsidiary peaks of Terere and Sendeyo.

As the trek progresses, climb out of the North Valley and enter the impressive
Mackinder Valley, one of Mount Kenya's broadest and most
spectacular valleys.

This is classic Afro-alpine terrain, characterized by unusual high-altitude
vegetation including giant groundsels and other plants uniquely adapted to the
mountain environment.

As you gain altitude, views towards Mount Kenya's principal peaks become
increasingly impressive.

The day's destination is Shipton's Camp, situated at approximately
4,200–4,300 metres, beneath the dramatic peaks of Batian and Nelion.

This is a long trekking day and an important part of the acclimatization process.

  • Approximate walking time: 7–8 hours
  • Highest overnight altitude: Approx. 4,200–4,300 m
  • Accommodation: Shipton's Camp / mountain cabin
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 3 – Shipton's Camp → Point Lenana Summit → Mintos → Mount Kenya Bandas

Summit departure: Approximately 2:00 AM

Today is the most demanding — and potentially the most rewarding — day of the
expedition.

Wake during the night and prepare for the final ascent towards
Point Lenana.

Depart Shipton's Camp at approximately 2:00 AM, trekking by
headlamp through the cold, dark high-altitude landscape.

The climb becomes progressively more demanding as you approach the summit.
The combination of darkness, cold temperatures and high altitude makes this
section a significant physical and mental challenge.

After approximately four hours of climbing, aim to reach
Point Lenana at 4,985 metres around sunrise, subject to weather,
trail and individual trekking conditions.

Point Lenana is Mount Kenya's highest trekking summit and provides
an extraordinary vantage point over the mountain landscape.

On a clear morning, the sunrise and surrounding high-altitude panorama make
reaching Point Lenana one of the great experiences of a Mount Kenya trek.

After enjoying the summit and taking photographs, begin the descent towards the
Chogoria side of the mountain.

Continue towards Mintos, where breakfast will be taken before
proceeding further down through the changing mountain landscape.

The descent eventually brings you to the Mount Kenya Bandas,
where you can rest after the demanding summit day.

  • Summit altitude: 4,985 m
  • Accommodation: Mount Kenya Bandas
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 4 – Mount Kenya Bandas → Chogoria → Nairobi

Morning departure: Approximately 8:00 AM

After breakfast, begin the final stage of your Mount Kenya adventure.

Walk approximately 10 kilometres along the Chogoria side before
meeting the transfer vehicle.

From the pickup point, continue by vehicle for approximately
22 kilometres towards Chogoria, avoiding an unnecessarily long
walk along the lower access road.

On arrival in Chogoria town, enjoy lunch and celebrate the
completion of your Mount Kenya traverse.

After lunch, board your transfer vehicle for the journey back to
Nairobi, bringing your four-day Mount Kenya adventure to an end.

  • Approximate final trekking time: 4 hours
  • Meals: Breakfast and lunch

Difficulty & Fitness Level

Difficulty: Challenging

This is a genuine high-altitude mountain trek and should not be considered an
ordinary sightseeing tour.

Participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable
walking for several hours over uneven and sometimes steep mountain terrain.

The summit day is particularly demanding because of the very early start,
cold temperatures, altitude and ascent to 4,985 metres.

Previous technical climbing experience is not required for Point Lenana,
but preparation, appropriate equipment, determination and reasonable cardiovascular
fitness are strongly recommended.

High altitude affects individuals differently, regardless of age or fitness.
Progress towards Point Lenana will therefore always remain subject to the guide's
assessment, weather, trail conditions and the health and safety of each participant.

Mountain Accommodation

Accommodation during the trek is in mountain camps, cabins or bandas,
depending on the location and operational arrangements.

This is mountain accommodation rather than a conventional safari lodge or hotel
experience. Facilities can be basic, particularly at higher elevations.

Tents are not normally required for this itinerary.

Participants should bring an appropriate
warm sleeping bag suitable for high-altitude conditions.

Porter Support

Each participant will have porter support, allowing guests to trek
primarily with a smaller daypack containing the items required during the day's walk.

Porter luggage limits and packing requirements will be communicated before departure.
