Budget ITINERARY for 4 nights / 5 days
Day 1: Nairobi to Nyeri – Highland Journey & Town Walk
Meet your guide in Nairobi for an early departure to Nyeri (approximately 3 hours by road). Enjoy the scenic drive through Kikuyu highlands, with views of Mount Kenya en route. Arrive in Nyeri Town by midday and check in to your budget hotel. In the afternoon, stretch your legs on a guided walking tour of Nyeri – visit the bustling local market and learn about colonial-era landmarks. In the evening, unwind at a local pub or café, mingling with residents and experiencing a bit of Kenyan town life. Dinner and overnight at a Nyeri hotel.
Day 2: Aberdare National Park – Karuru & Chania Waterfalls Hike
After breakfast, drive to Mweiga Gate at Aberdare National Park and meet a Kenya Wildlife Service armed ranger (required for all walks in the park). Enter the park’s dense bamboo and rainforest zone, keeping an eye out for monkeys and bushbucks as you drive to the trailhead near Karuru Falls Accompanied by your guide and ranger, begin the hike to the Karuru Falls viewpoint, where you’ll witness Kenya’s tallest waterfall plunging 273 meters in three tiers into a misty gorge. Continue trekking through forest trails and open glades toward Chania Falls, enjoying a picnic lunch with a backdrop of cascading waters. Along the way, marvel at lush vegetation (giant ferns, wildflowers) and possibly spot wildlife – buffalo, baboons, or even elephants – from a safe distance. If time and weather allow, take a short detour to Queen’s Cave, a historic picnic site behind a smaller waterfall (named after a 1950s royal visit). By late afternoon, exit the park and return to Nyeri. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: Aberdare National Park – Ol Donyo Lesatima Peak Trek
Fuel up with an early breakfast for the most challenging day. Drive back into Aberdare National Park, ascending to the moorland zone near the base of Ol Donyo Le Satima (also known simply as Satima Peak), the highest point of the Aberdare Range at 4,001 m. Trek through open alpine meadows and giant heather habitat as you gain elevation; the terrain is moderate but steady – a rewarding challenge for hiking enthusiasts. The trail to Satima Peak offers sweeping panoramas: on a clear day you can see the silhouette of Mt. Kenya to the east and the Great Rift Valley to the west from the summit. Keep an eye out for high-altitude wildlife like elands, reedbuck, or soaring birds of prey. Your park ranger ensures safety as you traverse buffalo territory in the misty highlands. Celebrate your summit achievement at the peak cairn, surrounded by otherworldly flora like giant lobelias. After a picnic lunch on the mountain, begin your descent. Exit the park by late afternoon and transfer back to Nyeri for a well-earned rest. Dinner and overnight in Nyeri.
Day 4: Nyeri – Coffee Farm & Community Eco-Experience
Today focuses on local culture and sustainable farming in Kenya’s highlands. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast, then set out on a guided walking tour of a local coffee farm on the slopes near Nyeri. Learn how coffee is grown, from seedling nurseries to mature trees, in this rich volcanic soil climate. A farm expert will walk you through the coffee cultivation process, harvesting (in season), and demonstrate traditional processing methods at a community coffee cooperative. Savor the aromas during a coffee tasting session – a chance to sample some of the world-renowned Mount Kenya region coffee and even buy some beans to take home. This interactive visit supports the local farmers and offers insight into rural Kenyan life. In the afternoon, you might also visit a small community conservation center or tree nursery, learning about local efforts in reforestation and eco-conservation. The day is a perfect change of pace to rest your legs while engaging with the local community. Lunch on the farm or in town, dinner back at the hotel, and overnight in Nyeri.
Day 5: Nyeri to Nairobi – Crocodile Farm Walk & Return
On your final morning, check out after breakfast and take a short nature walk to a local crocodile farm (Nyeri’s own Mamba Village). This leisure walk introduces you to Kenya’s crocodile conservation and farming – you’ll see Nile crocodiles up close from safe platforms and learn about their ecology and management. It’s an interesting add-on showcasing another aspect of Kenyan wildlife. Afterwards, begin the journey back to Nairobi. Enjoy a scenic drive as you descend from the Central Highlands, with possible stops for leg stretches or souvenirs along the way. Arrive in Nairobi by afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or the airport. Cherish the memories of five days spent hiking through waterfalls and moorlands, spotting wildlife, and experiencing the heart of Kenya’s highlands on this unique eco-safari.
